Cable Wireless Router
High speed internet is the next big have to have essential that people have tasted and now can't get enough of. Even ten years ago, having a high speed internet connection was still a luxury in a house and a functional wifi system where you could actually get decent internet speed was rare. With the invention of cable internet services, and it's decline in price to make it affordable for most of the public, this service, which is faster than DSL service, allowed for high speed connections to work wirelessly, creating what today is the very common high speed wifi internet network. Nowadays, people want and really expect to be able to open their laptop anywhere in someones house and do everything from browse and send e-mails to play bandwidth eating online games and watch streaming video. The technology is such that this is common practice and really affordable for most middle class families in the US. What makes this all possible? Well, after the advent of cable internet and wifi technology, a better, smarter cable wireless router was surely on the way.
A cable wireless router is a device which allows different devices with wifi technology to wirelessly connect to cable-speed internet connections. A router is a standard internet routing device which takes multiple devices and networks them together and connects them to the outside world via WAN (wide area network, or just internet) connection. Unlike similar devices like a hub or repeater which simply connect two different devices to each other, a router is a small computer in an of itself which has to interpret many signals at once and make decisions as to where to forward information within it's network to ensure maximum internet connectivity for each device in the network. It follows then that a cable wireless router is a device that does the same thing except that it connects multiple wireless devices to cable internet connections. With a cable wireless router, these devices can not only all wirelessly connect to the internet, but they can also wirelessly connect to each other, sharing files, printers, and other devices, and even processing capabilities if you have a little bit of computer know how to set up the network.
The cable wireless router does some pretty cool things with interconnecting devices and computers, but the cable internet is a pretty cool invention in and of itself. Before cable internet connection, many of the "super high speed" connections like fiber optic and T1 and T3 lines were still in their infancy and only really affordable to businesses and the very wealthy. This hampered the growth of the internet because people could only really use dial up internet services, which weren't really fast enough for wifi to really be effective. When DSL was released, which created high speed internet connections through existing phone lines, people began to hunger for faster internet speeds in the home. As it turns out, someone was smart enough to realize that if existing phone lines could connect people to the internet, existing cable television lines which just inherently had a greater capacity to transmit data, could also connect people to the internet. Thus, the fast and widely available service of cable internet was born, paving the way for the cable wireless router to create happy little wifi internet networks all over the world. Since then, more companies have begun to lay the ground work for fiber optic networks, and are even experimenting with super fast single mode fiber optic cables in certain areas. Although the cabling and devices are still very expensive and companies still have to pass of those costs to the consumer, prices have dropped so significantly in some area, and high speed internet connectivity has become such a draw, that many people can now reasonably afford to have fiber optic internet connection in their homes, which uses a cable wireless router as well, or rather, a wireless router capable of dealing with high speed internet connection. What else does the future hold? Faster speeds for wifi and internet, I imagine, but only time will tell.
